Kollmorgen Seidel (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Nyquist Industrial Control (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) are announcing a FireWire-to-Servo Drive module at the SPS/IPC Drives 2000 exhibition in Germany. This 'smart drive' is the result of co-operation between the companies to provide Open PC Motion Control solutions to OEM machine manufacturers. The KS3000, FireWire, Servo Drive connection module combines the capabilities of Nyquist's NYCe3000 motion controllers with Seidel's SERVOSTAR 600 digital servo amplifiers. The KS3000 plugs into the SERVOSTAR to create a 'smart drive'. The intelligence on the plug-in unit takes care of the real-time, high-speed synchronisation and interpolation required to build advanced multiple-axis solutions. The industry-standard high-speed IEEE-1394 FireWire network connects the 'smart-drives' to the open PC-based platform. At the top level, the Windows NT-based platform performs I/O processing, machine sequencing, GUI display, path planning, and kinematics solutions. This architecture optimises the use of PC technology while significantly reducing machine cabling. Both Seidel and Nyquist have a long history of providing solutions for OEM applications. According to Twan Smetsers, Marketing Manager of Nyquist, 'FireWire gives servo drive manufacturers the chance to differentiate. They can integrate the industrial motion control into the PC environment, distributing the motion control across the servo drives. This creates a complete digital motion chain, avoiding analog signals in the control system altogether. Along with Kollmorgen Seidel, we will initially be focusing on OEM customers in Europe. I am confident that the open standards used in the KS3000 will bring fast acceptance in the OEM market'. 'Our focus is to provide digital servo drives offering continually better dynamics and higher performance while simultaneously reducing costs' continued Udo Aull, Sales & Marketing Manager for Kollmorgen. 'The tremendous functionality, excellent flexibility and outstanding control loop characteristics of the SERVOSTAR 600 make it the intelligent solution for just about every drive task. Combined with the highly dynamic 6SMx7 synchronous servomotors and the Kollmorgen GOLDLINE BH high performance servomotor series, we can meet the requirements of virtually any machine manufacturer. ' SERVOSTAR and NYCe Motion Control will provide a complete open PC Motion Control solution that will provide major benefits to our customers. We are ready to demonstrate these benefits immediately.'

About: Nyquist Industrial Control
Nyquist has a long and rich history. A history that goes back to the beginning of the early seventies, when the company was still part of Philips. Since then, the organisation has played a pioneering role in the field of high-quality Motion Control systems, VME and PLC machine control platforms. The foundations for the present-day company Nyquist Industrial Control were paved in the seventies. This happened when the first standardised servo system was developed, initially created for Philips' internal machine building. This led to a large international installed base, both within and outside of our own organisation. For instance, the doors of the Dutch Railways' trains are still fitted with VME-based control systems from Nyquist. And then just think of all the automatically opening bridges, traction systems, trams, machines for making glass moulds, embroidering machinery, pastry-making machines, ships' terminals, incinerators and water purification plants. |
