GEOHELIX ANTENNA ENHANCES GPS PERFORMANCE
30 November 2005 - Sarantel Limited
| Sarantel, the leading manufacturer of revolutionary filtering antennas for mobile and wireless devices, announces today that ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited, will use Sarantel's GeoHelix Global Positioning System antenna in its new RPDA 300 ruggedized PDAs suitable for military, paramilitary and industrial specialized consumer applications. |
The Sarantel GPS antenna provides compact size, sturdy construction and first-rate performance to a product designed for the workforce on the move. The RPDA 300 is a full-featured, easy-to-use mobile computer designed to the highest shock and vibration standards for use in harsh environments. A key design requirement was that the RPDA 300 deliver excellent GPS performance in all angles and modes of use, one of the prime reasons for the selection of the Sarantel GeoHelix antenna. ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) selected Sarantel's GPS antenna for the RPDA 300 because of its unique properties and high performance in small, handheld devices. While conventional antennas become inefficient when in contact with RF-absorbing materials like the user's hand, Sarantel's GeoHelix GPS antenna remains frequency stable, yielding consistently high levels of satellite signals to the GPS receiver. Because the GeoHelix antenna is constructed of very durable, microwave ceramic material, it is ideal for ruggedized applications. The Sarantel antenna also has very broad beamwidth, ensuring that the RPDA 300 can be oriented and tilted in random directions without impairing its ability to achieve and maintain a solid GPS fix. Handheld computers like the RPDA also generate a lot of radio frequency noise that would be picked up by conventional GPS antennas, harming the ability of the GPS receiver to get a position fix. The GeoHelix antenna through innovative design rejects such noise and provides a clearer signal to the receiver in RF noisy environments. "The GeoHelix antenna adds great value to PDA applications," commented David Wither, Sarantel's CEO. "Particularly when the application infers harsh environments, the user doesn't want to have to worry about breaking off a flimsy flip-up antenna. The GeoHelix antenna's low profile and rugged construction make it ideal for this kind of product." Joe Murray, Sarantel's Asia/Pacific President added: "I am pleased that ST Electronics has chosen to work with Sarantel. The adoption of Sarantel's GPS antenna is growing and the GeoHelix solution for industrial and military applications is meeting rigorous component approval criteria demanded by specialized markets. We are also proud of this local success as Singapore is the home base of Sarantel's Asia/Pacific operations."
