NEMERIX DEMONSTRATES GPS SDIO CARD PROTOTYPE AT ION GNSS, 21-24 SEPTEMBER 2004
21 September 2004 - Sarantel Limited

Sarantel has been selected to supply its global positioning satellite antenna to NemeriX, a fabless semiconductor company and creators of the world's lowest power GPS chipset. NemeriX announces the availability of a GPS SDIO Card reference design that combines the benefits of its lowest power GPS chipset with Sarantel's high performance, omni-directional GeoHelix SMP antenna. This reference design enables SDIO card manufacturers to deliver GPS capabilities to mobile and digital consumer products equipped with an SD slot.

Because it is built into the NemeriX GPS SDIO card, the Sarantel antenna enables the card to receive a GPS signal thereby instantly GPS-enabling any mobile device it is slotted into. The new NemeriX GPS SDIO card will provide PDAs with navigation capability that can be used in automotive, marine and multiple recreational applications. The small GPS SDIO card is extremely lightweight and ideal for business travellers and sports enthusiasts.

NemeriX will supply the new GPS SDIO reference design to manufacturers of digital consumer products and PC peripherals, and is already in discussion with two commercial organisations. A Sarantel-enabled prototype GPS SDIO card will be one of the exciting demonstrations NemeriX is showcasing at ION GNSS on 21-24 September in Long Beach, California, US.

NemeriX chose the Sarantel GeoHelix SMP antenna for the GPS SDIO card because of its reliable and predictable performance. Vincent Mouret, CEO at NemeriX explains: "We selected the Sarantel antenna because it combines such a small size with high performance, making it perfect for tight integration in the new compact NemeriX SDIO card. The Sarantel antenna is omni-directional which makes it ideal for consumer applications, enabling robust GPS reception even when it is upside down and in close proximity to the human body."

David Wither, CEO at Sarantel said: "The consumer market is hungry for recreational GPS applications that are dependable, work in less than optimal environments and enable new experiences. This new NemeriX GPS SDIO card immediately GPS-enables PDAs and smartphones and doesn't require cables or a Bluetooth wireless connection. Consumer applications require small size without compromising performance. Sarantel's antenna is, a compact high performance solution, which offers robust GPS reception, it can be easily integrated into the smallest device, even into the SDIO card form factor. The Sarantel antenna works with the low power NemeriX GPS chipset to ensure that the battery life of the mobile device is not drained, a key issue for consumer acceptance."
