A new solution from Omniflex aims to solve voltage incompatibility problems in remote telemetry applications. The PT L50C-D is a novel combined power supply and dual charger that runs from a universal 85 to 264V AC input and is designed specifically for those applications that need to maintain both 12 and 24V systems. The PT L50C-D charges two 12V batteries (sealed lead acid) and provides a 24V load connection and a 12V load connection. With a total maximum continuous power output of 55W the loads are limited to 24V DC/2A and 12V DC/1A. Both load outputs can deliver 5A peak current (from the battery). It is common knowledge that the better the charger the longer the life of the batteries. Temperature is one of the parameters that is often ignored by maintained battery charging systems. The batteries will be damaged even at trickle charge at extreme ambient temperatures. All Omniflex chargers have temperature compensated battery charging circuits: as ambient temperatures go up the charger will back off to protect the battery. The PT L50C-D includes undervoltage protection which cuts out the battery to prevent a deep discharge situation in the event of prolonged mains failure. An AC detect contact output is available which can be wired into the telemetry system as an alarm. The unit has a small footprint so it is an easy retrofit and saves panel space on new applications. It is 60mm wide and 110mm high and takes up 120mm from the DIN rail to the terminals on the front. Batteries are not included and are chosen to suit the application. Omniflex recommends at least a 7Ah battery.
