Alan Spencer has joined UK miniature antenna manufacturer Sarantel as European sales manager, a role which will involve developing new opportunities for the company's successful range of advanced ceramic helical antennas (for GPS applications) and introducing some newer variants for wireless LAN, Bluetooth, 2.5G and 3G applications. He reports to Barrie Foley, the CEO. Commenting on the appointment Barrie Foley said, "Sarantel is now an established player in the antenna business and we selected Alan primarily because of his considerable knowledge of the telecoms markets we are poised to approach, and also because of his impressive track record developing customers who specify antennas." Sarantel's GeoHelix antennas have proved ideal for use in the rapidly expanding GPS market; firstly they are very small and therefore ideal for use in handsets, and secondly they have a very high beamwidth which enables them to capture signals from a greater number of satellites than would be possible with simple patch antennas. Furthermore, the GeoHelix devices, being balanced, are not affected by close proximity to objects including human tissue, meaning receiver sensitivity is not impaired when used in hand-held applications. These benefits will translate well to other hand-held wireless applications. Alan is no stranger to antennas, having spent nearly eight years in sales and business development for wireless technology companies. He has worked successfully with all the international mobile phone manufacturers during his career. Most recently he was with Centurion International which develops and manufactures antennas and wireless components, prior to this he was with Sigma Wireless Technologies selling its LMR antennas. He commented, "Sarantel's recent track record proves there are solid benefits provided by its technology, I think this is a very exciting time to be joining the team. Having proved the theories in the GPS market, PowerHelix technology offers us great opportunities in other applications which I know we are now ready to exploit."
