WINSYSTEMS' EMBEDDED NETWORK SBC PROVIDES LOW-COST, FAST TIME-TO-MARKET, AND EXTENDED TEMPERATURE OPERATION
19 November 2002 - WinSystems

Small size, wide operational temperature range, and x-86 compatibility combined with connectivity are the basic elements required for an industrial single board computer (SBC). To meet these needs, WinSystems introduces its SAT-520Plus, PC/104-expandable embedded computer. It combines an AMD SC520 processor with a 10/100 Ethernet controller, 4 serial COM ports and CRT/flat panel video controller, which is ideal for thin-client and other industrial network-enabled applications.

The board supports Linux, Windows and DOS Sockets software along with their network data transmission protocols. The SAT-520Plus is small, measuring 4.5' x 7.1' (114mm x 180mm), and operates from -40? to +85? Centigrade. The SAT-520Plus is targeted for the test, industrial telecommunication, data communication and information appliance markets.

' Embedded system designers have shown keen interest in utilizing well-known, inexpensive PC technologies for industrial internet and intranet applications. Since the SAT-520Plus' architecture is PC-compatible, it supports a vast software tool set including operating systems, web servers, device drives, libraries, languages, and debugging tools. By standardizing hardware and software around the broadly supported PC architecture, embedded systems designers can save substantial development costs, risks, and human resources plus shorten their time-to-market if they use an off-the-shelf single boards computer solution,' said Bob Burckle, Vice-President of WinSystems. 'The SAT-520Plus meets the core requirements of an embedded network computer while allowing a design engineer to customize their system by adding (if needed) standard or custom PC/104 or PC/104-Plus modules.'

The SAT-520Plus is based on the 32-bit, x86-compatible AMD SC520 CPU operating at 133 MHz. The CPU core includes a floating point unit plus enhancements to the PCI controller and Synchronous DRAM controller to optimize it for applications requiring high throughput combined with low latency. The board has a 32-bit PCI interface that is connected to the 10/100 Ethernet controller, CRT/flat panel video controller, and PC/104-Plus connector.

Up to 256-Mbytes of SDRAM can be mounted in a standard SODIMM socket plus up to a 1Gigabit M-Systems' DiskOnChip Flash memory in a 32-pin socket. Four independent, full-duplex, 16C550-compatible UARTs provide serial data communication up to 115,200 bits per second. Twenty-four lines of digital I/O, floppy disk controller, IDE hard disk interface, keyboard controller, line printer (LPT) interface, and mouse port rounds out the SAT-520Plus' major system features. The SAT-520Plus can operate as a standalone SBC or the system engineer can add either off-the-shelf or user-designed PC/104 and PC/104-Plus expansion I/O modules. The SAT-520Plus' operating temperature range is from -40° to +85° Celsius. The board requires a single +5 volt supply at 1.2 Amps.

About: WinSystems
Founded in 1982, we manufacture and distribute embedded computers for use in industrial applications. Our products include embedded PC-compatible single board computers, memory boards, input/output (I/O) and enclosures based upon the STD Bus and PC/104 Bus standard architecture.

We offer three product families:

Embedded PCs. We design both busless embedded single board computers (SBCs) with PC/104 and PC/104-Plus expansion and computers with a hybrid of both STD Bus and PC/104 Bus support. These units are optimized for low cost and high functionality by incorporating all of the basic functions of a computer on a single circuit card.

These PC/104, PC/104-Plus and STD Bus expandable PCs embed the PC architecture in space and power sensitive industrial applications. We standardize this hardware and software around the broadly supported PC architecture to save the embedded systems designers substantial development costs and risks plus shorten their time-to-market.

STD Bus. As the approved IEEE-961 standard microcomputer bus, the STD Bus is popular worldwide. The STD Bus has a number of advantages over other bus architectures used in industrial applications such as the PC Bus and Multibus. Its simple interface, smaller card size (4.5” x 6.5”); solid, nearly square peripheral cards, and strong card mounts, tolerate shock and vibrations making the STD Bus ideal for rugged industrial enviroments.

PC/104 Bus. The PC/104 standard defines a compact, self-stacking, modular form-factor bus for embedding IBM PC and PC/AT compatible system functions within embedded microcomputer applications. The PC/104 modules' small size (3.6” x 3.8”) and low power requirements (typically 1-2 watts per module) make them ideally suited to embedded control applications.

Distribution: Direct sales force.

Markets: Orginal Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and systems integrators selling to industrial, manufacturing, transportation, communication and military industries, or other markets that require electronic bus products with rugged durability, performance and a long system life span.
