INVENSYS TO SUPPLY UPGRADED DIGITAL TURBINE CONTROL SYSTEMS AT AEP'S COOK NUCLEAR PLANT
14 November 2005 - Invensys plc
| Invensys Process Systems today announced that it will supply American Electric Power (NYSE:AEP) with Triconex (www.triconex.com) electronic control systems for the main turbines and feedwater pump turbines on both units at the Cook Nuclear Plant in Bridgman, Michigan. TRISIM Plus software from SimSci-Esscor (www.simsci-esscor.com) will simulate the Triconex digital controllers and will be added to Cook's existing plant simulator. |
Invensys will also supply Wonderware (www.wonderware.com) InTouch human machine interface software and IndustrialSQL Server plant historian, as well as start-up and training services to support the Invensys products. Mechanical interfaces and installation will be supplied by others. The dual-unit 2,143-megawatt Cook Plant is Michigan's largest nuclear station, capable of providing enough power to serve more than 1.5 million typical homes. The new digital systems will replace existing controls in an upgrade project that is on a fast track to meet AEP's implementation goals. Invensys will supply Triconex triple-modular redundant turbomachinery controllers. These Tricon systems will be used on each of Cook Units 1 and 2 main turbine generators, as well as the feed water pump turbines for each unit. To capture, store, retrieve and analyze all turbine operating data from the Tricon turbine control systems, Invensys will supply the Trilogger high speed, high-resolution control event recording solution. The TMR architecture provides the highest levels of nuclear industry-required reliability by employing three, isolated, parallel control systems and extensive diagnostics integrated into a single Tricon system. Using two-out-of-three voting, the system provides high-integrity, error-free, uninterrupted process operation with no single point of failure. Since the Tricon redundant control functions and diagnostics are embedded and transparent, each system behaves as a single control device to the engineer or operator. The Trilogger event recorder is specially designed to match the Tricon high-frequency control scan rates, allowing high resolution data access and analysis for all data points relating to the control of Cook's turbines. Trilogger software modules allow full on-line event logging, off-line playback for data analysis and presentation, and remote data viewing and recording control. To support comprehensive control system checkout prior to commissioning, TRISIM Plus software from SimSci-Esscor will be employed to exactly model the new Triconex control architecture. TRISIM Plus provides comprehensive simulation, facilitating efficient control system design, training, commissioning and start-up. This virtual control system precisely duplicates the operational experience in an off-line, low risk manner and dramatically reduces the time required for commissioning. The new turbine control operator interfaces will be based on Wonderware's InTouch human machine interface software. This software provides more user-friendly process visualization, operation, and easier access to performance and operational data. This data will be maintained in the Wonderware IndustrialSQL Server real-time plant historian, which provides plant decision-makers with immediate access to detailed, real-time plant information, leading to performance improvement. Providing comprehensive database functionality for plant process information, the IndustrialSQL Server historian is optimized for operation and maintenance of critical automation applications, where uninterrupted data flow is paramount.
