INVENSYS TO ADOPT NEW ENHANCED EDDL TECHNOLOGY USING HART SMART DEVICE CONFIGURATOR TOOLS
25 October 2005 - Invensys plc

Invensys Process Systems today announced plans to embed the new Smart Device Configurator (SDC-625) technology from the HART Communication Foundation into their process automation system. This HCF technology will enable customers to take advantage of the new enhanced electronic device description language being developed in a collaborative project between the HCF, other international fieldbus organizations and automation system and device suppliers.

"Invensys Process Systems is a participant in the ongoing device description collaboration project. Our products will integrate enhanced EDDL to provide customers with Invensys tools capable of configuring all HART devices," said Scott Bump, Director of Fieldbus Technology Development at Invensys Process Systems. "The role of the control system vendor is to provide value from the field devices throughout their life cycle, including installation and operation and to ensure that information from all connected devices is integrated in a way that facilitates its use in higher level applications."

Invensys brings value during the device installation phase by providing a comprehensive device configuration and commissioning environment utilizing EDDL-based device descriptions. The device descriptions define the device's parameters and configuration menus to the Invensys configurator. Device vendors can also program sequential interactive steps for calibrating and starting up field devices in EDDL. Finally, enhancements to EDDL let device vendors define user interfaces for plots, trends, and storage of device data, which can be particularly useful in configuring and starting up complex field devices.

The HCF uses the SDC-625 as a standard reference host. "Invensys' adoption of the SDC technology will align their system with standard HCF supported Device Description Language, and will allow their system to utilize the 1000+ manufacturer's DDs registered with the HCF DD Library", said Ed Ladd, HCF Director of Technology Programs. "Implementation of EDDL by Invensys takes us one step closer to our goal-one DD to work everywhere."

Invensys goes further by also deploying the highly complementary FDT technology in its fieldbus solutions with both EDDL and FDT/DTM technology working together in harmony. "Invensys' Foxboro systems group is creating a powerful Universal HART Device Type Manager based on the HART SDC technology. This engineering and maintenance tool will fully support standard and enhanced DDL files and will interface to the system and access device data using FDT interfaces," said Bump. "DD files are essential to interface HART devices to the control system. It is the way device vendors help us to understand their products, even when the product is not present. These same device vendors can also provide optional Device Type Managers. DTMs are Windows applications that bring additional value in the area of asset performance management, providing a plug-in user interface that maintenance staffs can use for advanced analysis of a device. EDDL files and DTMs work together to provide the needed system features for the entire plant lifecycle; engineering, configuration, commissioning and the all-important operational phase."
