LCU: DISTRIBUTED CONTROL AND STARTING
15 December 2005 - Lenze Limited

Drive-based safety with simple installation and a robust design with a high degree of protection is in the upgraded Local Control Unit distributed motor controls from Lenze, a range that Includes functionality such as the stand-alone handling of PLC tasks. LCU is available as a motor starter for fixed speed motors and as a frequency inverter for variable speed operation.

These controls are used mainly in materials handling technology, especially in the automotive industry. The two variants in the LCU line are part of the "Decentralised Drives & Controllers" range from L-force, the new generation of drive and automation technology from Lenze.

The LCU starter covers motor powers of up to 1.5 or 3.0 kW. The rugged cast aluminium IP54 housing allows the starter to be installed close to the motor outside the control cabinet. The connection system is completely pluggable to simplify installation and maintenance. Maintenance and diagnostics are made easier by comprehensive status messages, output on a four-line text display, and status LEDs. The safety of maintenance personnel is enhanced by a lockable service switch.

The LCU starter is available as a reversing starter or for two motor operation. Electronic switches (Triacs) handle the wear free control of the motor. The smooth starting phase-fired control characteristic results in travel profiles that are gentle on both material and mechanical systems, for example roller conveyors, rotary tables or skid conveyors.

The LCU starter conforms to the L-force concept of integrating safety engineering aspects as "drive-based safety" in the drives. The safe protection against restart function satisfies IEC 61508 (SIL 3). The drives communicate via Profisafe, feature brake control, safe inputs and outputs and all-pole disconnection that mechanically isolates all phases from the 400-V mains.

Lenze has adopted the same design concept for its frequency inverters. The LCU inverter is designed for a motor power range of 0.75 to 3.0 kW. An 11 kW version is being developed. Potential applications are hoists, rotary tables or scissor-type lift tables. The LCU inverter has two selectable operating modes: without feedback or as a closed loop drive in combination with encoders or resolvers. The functional range can be scaled to suit the application using software modules. The portfolio extends from simple speed control through motor control functions to soft-PLC, programmable in the languages laid down in IEC 61131-3.
