PANASONIC B1 RANGE – NEW SMALL MOTORS FROM PANASONIC

The new Panasonic B1 range of motors and geared motors breaks new ground with the drive integrated inside the motor frame. Available from 30 to 130W, the B1 range combines the benefits of DC performance with the robustness of AC motors. Using high efficiency brushless technology, these compact motors remove the need for a panel mounted drive.

The B1 motors are based on Panasonic Hyper technology with permanent magnet brushless motors that are maintenance free. A plastic body has been developed with a moulded core design for the windings resulting in reduced motor mass and length.

Compared to conventional motors, the B1 achieves a similar length in spite of the built-in drive. Built into the back of the motor with IP65 protection, the drive uses hall-effect sensors for accurate speed control. The resulting performance is above open loop inverter systems and at a level with DC systems. Constant torque is available across a 100:1 speed range (30 to 3000 rev/min), speed holding accuracy is better than 1% and full torque is available at zero speed.

Two optional keypads are available for communications. The analogue keypad allows the motor to be controlled using the onboard stop/start and cw/ccw switches with speed control via the face-mounted potentiometer. The digital keypad offers a wider range of control and functionality as drive parameters can be accessed and modified to meet application demands. A 5 digit LED can be used to display speed, trip errors and parameter values, whilst a 2 digit LED display is used for parameter numbers and direction of rotation. Alternatively, as the drive has factory set parameters, it is possible to use the B1 series without any keypad and directly access the I/O using separate switches and potentiometer.

The compact dimensions with the drive being inbuilt onto the motor, make the units suitable for material handling in labelling machines, packaging machines and on conveyors, indeed any variable speed application requiring a wide speed range with accurate speed holding. They have been successfully used for synchronising conveyors in the PCB industry due to the B1's speed holding characteristics.

Models are available from Lenze Ltd for powers 30 to 130W and suiting 110V or 230V single phase supply. They meet CE and UL regulations. The B1 motors can be fitted with Panasonic G-series gearboxes to give interchangeable mounting dimensions with the well-known G-series geared motors. Gear ratios are available between 3 and 200.
