ARCOM LAUNCHES WIRELESS EDGE ROUTER
15 February 2005 - Arcom

Kansas City, USA and Cambridge, England, Arcom is now offering an industrial Wireless Edge Router (WER1500) that enables wireless connectivity of data appliances over Nextel's nationwide digital network, allowing users to access enterprise IT systems and the Internet. As an industrial network gateway using TCP/IP over the Nextel iDEN network, the WER1500 has been tested and approved for fixed and mobile (vehicle) applications.

Designed for telemetry and remote access services, the WER1500 offers secure communications for terminal server/clients equipment as well as serving an Internet router. Devices are connected to the WER1500 using a

High res. TIF image (2.267MB) serial port (RS-232 or RS-485), local Ethernet, or by using an ad-hoc WiFi network. Utilizing TCP/IP, the WER1500 can be configured with a permanent public IP address so that it can be accessed from any Internet host system. By using NAT (Network Address Translation), the IP addresses of local connections (serial PPP, LAN & WiFi) can be routed over the Nextel iDEN network. For secure communications the WER1500 can be configured to use a variety of encryption and authentication techniques, essential in applications where data privacy and integrity are mandatory.

The WER1500 is also available with a factory fitted Global Positioning System receiver providing accurate vehicle location data. "Special considerations often need to be made if a truck is carrying chilled food products. Since it can be monitored during transit, the logistics company can plan arrival times and monitor the storage conditions during its journey from the packing plant to the dock door of the store. Simultaneously, the WER1500 offers the driver access to the Internet from his laptop and can provide a number of other programmable services," said Kurt Hochanadel, product manager with Arcom.

Target applications for WER1500 include fixed or mobile telemetry services in the utility industries, remote monitoring for Homeland Security, enhanced Field Force Automation, Automatic Vehicle Location and distributed building management such as Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems. The WER1500 is a highly configurable, fully programmable product based on Linux making it ideal for OEM customers wanting a wireless platform to integrate additional application software within their vertical market expertise.
