MEZZANINE CARD EXPANDS PROTOCOL PROCESSING
11 October 2005 - Artesyn Technologies
| Available now from Artesyn Communication Products, the Pm8540 is a ProcessorPMC protocol and packet processing engine for telecomms infrastructure applications. Based on the MPC8540 PowerQUICC III communications processor from Freescale Semiconductor, the Pm8540 gives telecomms OEMs a simple way to add protocol processing and system management capability to telecomms systems equipped with PMC or PTMC (PCI Telephony Mezzanine Card) expansion slots, including Artesyn's own Katana AdvancedTCA and PICMG 2.16 blades. |
The Pm8540 features two Gigabit 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet ports, which are routed to the PMC connector, and one 10/100BaseTX Ethernet port, which is routed to the module's front bezel. The Pm8540 also features up to 512Mbyte of SDRAM, 32Mbyte of Flash memory, an I2C bus system management controller, and a four-channel DMA controller, which boosts overall performance by facilitating high-speed data movement between module resources without CPU intervention. Freescale's MPC8540 PowerQUICC III processor provides the compute and protocol acceleration engine for the Pm8540. The MPC8540's PowerPC e500 core delivers a peak performance of 2310MIPS at 1GHz. The MPC8540 also features 256Kbyte of L2 cache, a DDR SDRAM memory controller, two Gigabit 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet controllers, a 10/100 Ethernet controller, a 64bit PCI/PCI-X controller operating at speeds of up to 133MHz, a parallel RapidIO controller, and the Ocean nonblocking crossbar switch fabric. 'The Pm8540's versatile, high-performance PowerQUICC III processor, gigabit Ethernet packet interface, and convenient PrPMC form factor make it an excellent packet and protocol processing engine', said Todd Wynia, Vice President of Marketing at Artesyn. 'The Pm8540's high-performance, low-power architecture makes it ideal for adding protocol processing, signalling, and OA and M functionality to a wide range of telecomms systems, including media gateways, softswitches, signalling gateways and basestation controllers'. 'Artesyn has been a pioneer in developing open architecture solutions for the industry-leading PowerQUICC family', said Lynelle McKay, Vice President and General Manager of Freescale Semiconductor's Digital Systems.
