MUNICIPAL WATER AUTHORITIES OPTIMIZE MOTOR PERFORMANCE AND REDUCE DOWNTIME WITH GE MULTILIN MOTOR MANAGEMENT RELAYS
07 November 2002 - GE Industrial Systems

Houston, Texas-based Shrader Engineering Co., Inc., a provider of electrical engineering services, has recently established an agreement with the San Jacinto River Authority to provide motors utilizing the SR 469 Motor Management Relay at all of its well sites. This marks the fifth motor contract Shrader has fulfilled with the water treatment facility, in which GE Multilin's SR 469 will be utilized to provide protection and diagnostic functions.

Shrader has been including the SR 469 in its design specifications for five years and has installed hundreds at well sites for Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) and other water authorities in Texas. In using the relay for motor protection and diagnostics, the firm has been able to virtually eliminate the incidences of motor burn-outs - a frequent problem for many of the MUDs. Company president Chal Shrader, P.E., reports, 'Many of the municipal districts were having recurring burn-outs. Since we started using the SR 469 relay, it has been playing a valuable role in eliminating those problems.'

Shrader says that at some sites, burn-outs were occurring every six months, without any indication of the cause of the problem. 'By installing a 469, the motor is tripped before a burn-out occurs and technicians can look at waveforms to pinpoint the cause and take corrective action.'

He adds that burn-outs are very costly, since a motor can take days or even a month to repair and/or replace, with utilities not only incurring the cost of repairs, but rental fees for an interim motor. 'The SR 469 more than pays for itself in engineering, maintenance and service time,' says Shrader. 'If it can prevent a single burn-out, you have saved yourself the expense of a new motor and installation, which can easily cost you more than $10,000.'

The SR 469's protection and diagnostic features allow companies to capture waveforms, which can be viewed on site or remotely via a SCADA system. 'It's got it all,' says Shrader. 'It gives anyone the ability to investigate and determine why a problem is present, and allows for remote connectivity for real-time monitoring. Its memory function also allows you to go back to previous events. Everyone we provide motors for receives an SR 469. It?s always part of our design specifications.'

Bob Callahan of Double E Engineering Sales, Inc., the authorized distributor for GE Multilin products in Texas, says, 'Shrader is now using the SR 469 on all its motor projects, whether a new installation or a retrofit. The SR 469's built-in intelligence and ability to record events, along with its protection functions, ensure that motor burn-outs are no longer a problem. Also, the ability to use remote monitoring functions is especially valuable for those municipalities operating on a SCADA system. It has proven its worth time and again.'
