GE MULTILIN ANNOUNCES NEW SOLUTION FOR DISTRIBUTION FEEDER RECLOSER/BREAKER PROTECTION & CONTROL
28 November 2002 - GE Industrial Systems
| GE Multilin announces a new solution for distribution feeder recloser or breaker control: the Universal Recloser Control (URC). The URC provides advanced protection, monitoring, control and communications in a convenient package that can be used on both retrofit and new applications. The URC comes in an environmentally hardened casing, featuring backup power and climate control options, which can be easily pole-mounted. |
GE Multilin can design a recloser solution to fit the individual requirements of a customer, thanks to the scalable architecture of the URC. The URC is designed to be compatible with GE distribution reclosers and breakers, and will also work with other distribution recloser or breaker suppliers, such as Kyle/Cooper. GE Multilin will work to provide wiring and protective modifications for other distribution breaker/recloser suppliers. The URC features advanced protection algorithms that have been used for thousands of unit/years in hundreds of digital products, such as overcurrent, auto-reclosing, reverse power, over/under voltage, under/over frequency, breaker failure, directionality, etc. Its microprocessor-based design allows the user to custom program many protection settings using a Windows-based software program via local or remote connection. Programmable FlexLogic system includes gates, latches, timers, counters and digital elements. Large user-programmable pushbuttons on the front panel provide easy local control and secure shut-out capability, such as Trip, Close, Block Reclose, Block Ground Overcurrent, Hot-Line-Tag, Local/Remote, etc. The URC features a four shot auto-recloser with an independent dead time setting for each shot. Programmable sequence coordination is included with 'fast' and 'slow' recloser curve types (up to 41 different recloser type curves are available). Optional high impedance fault detection (HI-Z) or downed conductor detection provides a unique solution that provides secure operation, resulting in quick response to potential hazardous public conditions. The unit records all fault information into an event log, and also captures oscillography data that can be used for fault analysis. Harmonic data up to the 25th harmonic on measured voltage and current is also stored. The recorded data can be used to determine the root cause and location of faults or customer problems. The URC's expandable communications module provides Ethernet connection to other relays or control/monitoring system. The communication protocols supported are ModBus RTU (serial and TCP/IP), MMS/UCA2 (TCP/IP and OSI), and DNP 3.0 (serial and TCP/IP). A front RS232 connection provides local PC connectivity for settings, maintenance, reporting and monitoring by utility personnel. The scalable architecture of the URC allows users to protect, control and monitor multiple (2, 3, or 4) reclosers/breakers in a single package. Multiple three phase currents and voltages can be wired to the URC. Also, multiple phase, ground and neutral time overcurrent elements are included to perform 'fast' and 'slow' tripping functions for each connected recloser/breaker. The URC is a solid value for protecting and controlling distribution feeder reclosers or breakers. Its scalable architecture, flexible protection functions, open communications architecture, compatibility with various manufacturers of reclosers or breakers, multiple recloser applications make it an ideal choice for retrofit and new applications. GE Multilin manufactures and supports the entire recloser control solutions package through a network of sales offices, and regional repair/maintenance facilities.
