LYNUXWORKS SUPPORT FOR AMCC PROCESSORS WITH BLUECAT LINUX SUPPORT FOR POWERPC 440EP PROCESSOR
13 July 2005 - LynuxWorks

LynuxWorks Inc. today announced the availability of its BlueCat Linux embedded operating system for the Applied Micro Circuits Corp PowerPC 440EP processor. Based on the Linux 2.6 kernel, BlueCat Linux is designed to provide a stable embedded operating system and deliver the flexibility and cost benefits of open-source software for a wide range of embedded systems and applications. Customers interested in evaluating BlueCat Linux with the PowerPC 440EP processor can so do with the recently introduced evaluation kit from AMCC.

The PowerPC 440EP embedded processor from AMCC offers exceptional performance, design flexibility, and robust features geared to demanding imaging, industrial control, networking and other embedded applications. With speeds of up to 533MHz, PowerPC Book E architecture, and a rich peripheral mix, PowerPC 440EP processors are ideally suited for a wide range of high-performance applications. The 440EP features state-of-the-art peripherals including DDR SDRAM, and extensive connectivity via Ethernet, USB, UARTs, IIC, SPI and PCI.

BlueCat Linux for the PowerPC 440EP offers developers a commercial embedded Linux software environment where a balance of high performance and low power are needed for the most intensive computing environments, including applications within the digital imaging, telematics and industrial automation markets. Developers that are interested in performing tests in an optimal development environment with BlueCat Linux and the AMCC 440EP can do so with the recently introduced evaluation kit that includes sample applications and system level benchmarks. The AMCC PowerPC 440EP evaluation kit allows customers to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the 440EP processor and use the BlueCat Linux design as a starting-point for their own product development to accelerate system development time.

Developers who choose BlueCat Linux for the PowerPC 440EP will also have access to a variety of advanced embedded development tools from LynuxWorks such as VisualLynux, SpyKer and Luminosity to enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy products to market at a significantly lower cost.

VisualLynux is an extension of Microsoft Visual Studio IDE that enables developers to build applications in a Windows host environment to accelerate development time while improving product performance and quality. LynuxWorks' SpyKer is the first dynamically instrumented system trace analyzer that allows developers to accurately perform event tracing to not only gather, display and interact with data concerning their applications, but also accelerate development and debugging with easy, anytime visibility into their product design process. Luminosity is a full-featured Java-based IDE tool that is based on the Eclipse platform and provides a fast and easy way to create, edit, compile, manage, and debug embedded and real-time applications.

"We remain committed and focused in supporting AMCC's entire line of embedded processors," said Bob Morris, vice president of marketing, LynuxWorks. "Our strategy to team up with innovative hardware suppliers like AMCC allows us to provide the market a with a comprehensive support package that maximizes system performance and improves the overall design flow which is needed to get products out the door and into the market quickly."

"Industry partners like LynuxWorks help provide our customers with the widest range of solutions and support tools needed to get their designs off the ground and running," said Charlie Ashton, director of PowerPC software at AMCC. "With BlueCat Linux, LynuxWorks can offer our customers the benefits of low-cost and flexibility associated with open source software while maximizing the performance of our 440EP processor."
