GE Power Controls has introduced the Underground Technology System, a new innovative application of deep-sea technology protection of telecom industry infrastructure investments. What started with a requirement for safe watertight and flood proof housings for the distribution of electric energy has lead to a wide range of specialized safety applications providing a unique solution to the telecom industry.

Based on the technology of deep-sea diving equipment, GE designed a patented housing for repeater amplifiers. The repeaters are easily and immediately accessible instead of fully buried underground, saving time, money, and aggravation by mitigating the need to break up asphalt, roads, or sidewalks as traditionally done in the past. Measurements and faults repairs are easily completed while the UTS remains completely flood proof-an enormous advantage for the telecom infrastructure providers.

Because of the UTS's flexible design it can be placed almost anywhere: a sidewalk, a road or in the middle of a park, making building permits and architectural specifications quick and painless for a fast introduction of a new connection.

Another unique aspect of the UTS is the pop-up design for mobile operators, allowing transmitters and amplifiers for GSM, GPRS & UMTS to better blend into the landscape. And to further save time, almost the entire system, including the power supply can be set up in only one day.

The UTS also has applications for combined copper and fibre cable providing a secure environment to support the fibre to the curb infrastructure (e.g., ADSL). UTS allows broadband data transmission along fibre while the existing copper lead serves as core power supply cores and still leaving analogue connections open.
