GE INDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS EARNS PRESTIGIOUS NORTH CAROLINA 'STAR' AWARD
04 June 2003 - GE Industrial Systems
| For their rigorous adherence to stringent health and safety standards, GE Industrial Systems' Mebane Power Distribution Plant officially celebrated recognition as a 'STAR' on June 3, 2003, under the North Carolina Department of Labor (DOL) guidelines. As a voluntary program within the Occupational Safety and Health Division of the DOL, the North Carolina STAR is a prestigious award granted to exemplary facilities. |
GE Industrial Systems is committed to the protection of people around the world with its products and services. And, following a rich heritage of protecting employee health and safety, the Mebane Plant is GE's 100th facility to receive the prestigious 'STAR' status as defined by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). North Carolina's STAR award goes above and beyond the federal standards, requiring that recipients prove injury and illness incidence rates, as well as lost and restricted workday injury rates, fall not only below the industry average, but 50% below industry average. Beyond injury and illness rate guidelines, candidates for the award are assessed according to nineteen other elements, such as management commitment and regular self-inspection. In celebration of this significant event, Mebane employees, GE leaders and officers participated in a ceremony at the plant. Mark Schatz, Mebane's plant manager, applauded the plant's receipt of this coveted award. 'The health and safety of our employees is our highest priority. Receiving the STAR award took the effort of each and every employee and it is a great honor to be recognized by the state of North Carolina for this phenomenal achievement,' said Schatz. After completing a comprehensive review of the Mebane Plant's health and safety programs and policies, the North Carolina DOL confirmed that the facility met the requirements of the award and had demonstrated a commitment to practicing exemplary worker protection. Recipients of the STAR award establish themselves as leaders in employee health and safety, with 60 to 80 percent fewer lost workday injuries than would be expected from a comparable work site. In addition to the STAR award, the state of North Carolina also presented the Mebane Plant with the 'Million Hour Safety Award.' This distinguished award recognizes the plant as successfully docking one million employee hours with no case of injury or illness involving days away from work. Former STAR Program Manager, John Bonger, congratulated the GE plant, saying, 'GE Mebane is now a member of an exclusive group of top-notch employers which place high value in plant safety and the health of their employees.'
