David Kennedy elected as successor to Dr. Claudio Carrelli

Heidelberg. Eurescom has a new director. As of today, David Kennedy is leading the company. On 11 May, the general assembly of Eurescom had unanimously elected David Kennedy as the new director of Eurescom. He succeeded Dr. Claudio Carrelli, who retired at the end of June.

Heidelberg. International telecom experts expressed their concern about the decreasing investments in R&D in Europe at a two-day conference organised by EURESCOM on 16 and 17 May. 'I am concerned about the low demand for research and innovation in Europe,' said Dr. Hagen Hultzsch, chairman of the supervisory board of T-Venture, a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary for venture capital. The experts identified several reasons for this negative trend. 'Business units view R&D mainly as a cost rather than an investment,' explained David Kennedy, senior manager at EURESCOM.

Between 1995 and 1999 3442 companies worldwide tried to make money as Web start-ups. 20 per cent were forced to declare bankruptcy after a short period of time. Only a small percentage had the courage to go public and trade at the stock exchange. Share issues were profitable for only 1 per cent of the new start-ups.
