Established in 1984 Brainboxes is a rapidly growing company specialising in the design and the manufacture of PC add-on cards suitable for mission critical applications. The company's product range, which now exceeds 100 products, incorporates PCI, PCMCIA, USB and Bluetooth technology geared towards Serial Communications, EPOS and Mobile Data Communications.

Brainboxes moved to their existing premises in Wavertree Technology Park, Liverpool, after winning first prize in the Liverpool Echo Flying Start business competition in 1986. Brainboxes has a team of qualified designers and spends over 30 per cent of its total expenditure on research and development.

Unusually, all Brainboxes' products are manufactured on site in Liverpool. The company invests substantial funds to ensure that it's manufacturing facility competes with the best in the world. This complete control over the development and manufacturing process enables us to be responsive to increasing customer demands. It also allows us to offer a 'Perfect Fit, Custom Design' service - providing products that perfectly match a customer's application.

Brainboxes also develops the appropriate software drivers, which are compatible with all major operating systems. Brainboxes' customer base includes organisations operating in a number of different markets including leisure, retail, banking, industrial process control, government research agencies, the military and a number of Universities.

New Universal PCI Serial Connectivity

Brainboxes 'New Universal PCI Serial Range' meets the new slot standard for PCI serial cards that is rapidly being adapted by many PC manufacturers. PCI 2.3 requires that all plug-in cards support 3.3V signalling, however many systems still use 5V signalling. To accommodate both signalling types our new range of Universal PCI is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V. Brainboxes is cooperating with AgiInfoLink, to bring Bluetooth wireless technology to livestock tracking applications. The animals are tagged with an RFID ID tag soon after birth and from then on are tracked across a farm-to-market data network supplied by AgInfoLink. The wireless Bluetooth communication, made possible by Brainboxes' serial Bluetooth converter modules, provides the important link between the reader and a PC or PDA which processes the information. The key application for this technology is for tracking the attributes associated with livestock and other agricultural products - from vaccinations, treatments and weights to movement and location history.
Brainboxes launches first card from its new Universal PCI range

Brainboxes has announced the launch of its first card from a new range of universal PCI that supports both 5 volt and newer 3.3 volt standards. The complete new range of Universal PCI cards will shortly follow the WHQL approved UC-101 and will be based upon the same technology. This Low Profile card (UC-101) is the first of the new range of products using a new chip based upon Intellectual Property developed by the company over the last 3 years. The Brainboxes 1+1 UC-101 card has one standard 9-pin RS232 COM port, plus a second RS232 connection. UC-101 is designed to suit the retail and financial sectors with some of the key applications for Brainboxes' latest RS232 serial card being connection to modems, instrument control, or remote access servers.
Brainboxes adopts v1.2 Bluetooth firmware from CSR

Brainboxes announced that the company is updating its Bluetooth hardware to be compliant with the latest version of the Bluetooth specification (v1.2). Brainboxes is now using v1.2 firmware from leading Bluetooth silicon vendor CSR. The move to v1.2 will give Brainboxes all of the advantages of the improved Bluetooth specification whilst retaining full backwards compatibility with existing Bluetooth equipment. North west based technology company Brainboxes has seen a huge 400% rise in the sales figures of their PCMCIA serial port cards over the past 12 months, as a result of many PC and laptop manufacturers actually missing this vital connection point. Brainboxes have been manufacturing the PCMCIA serial port card for some time, but have experienced a sudden and dramatic upturn in sales of the product. Stephen Evans explains: 'Many large companies have sales forces that use the RS232 port to connect to personal data assistants or to mobile phones. The removal of this port from many laptops, has left them in a difficult position.'
