NNE builds new vaccine facility for Bavarian Nordic in record time

In the record-breaking time of 11 months, NNE has built a new vaccine production facility for the biopharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic A/S. The new facility, based in Kvistgaard, Denmark started production on 4 July 2005. On-site construction of the 9,000 m2 state-of-the-art facility started on 1 August 2004 and was completed less than a year later when Bavarian Nordic accepted transfer of the facility and its related systems and technologies from NNE.
NNE succeeds in French pharmaceutical expansion project

On 8 September the healthcare company Novo Nordisk inaugurated a new production facility for insulin products in Chartres, 80 km south-west of Paris. The facility enables Novo Nordisk to meet the worldwide growing demand for insulin pens and cartridges used for treatment of people with diabetes.

On 16 December NNE formally completed the hand-over process for a new plant for purification of insulin analogues. The 7,000 m2 greenfield project is built in Kalundborg, Denmark, for the healthcare company Novo Nordisk A/S, and the plant has been constructed in only 14½ months from the granting of initial funding to start of Performance Qualification.

NNE has just completed the reconstruction of Novo Nordisk's pharmaceutical finished goods plant in Gentofte, Denmark. The reconstruction took place during the summer holiday period, and in record time, to minimise the period, when the production had to be extraordinarily interrupted.
400 days with no work accidents

The Kalundborg site in Denmark where Novo Nordisk is building a new insulin factory has not had a single notifiable work accident since construction began last year. An exceptional feat for a construction job of this magnitude, to which more than 200,000 man-hours have already been devoted. Efforts to make the construction site a safe place to work have been ongoing since project start-up. A programme of several new safety courses has played a role in keeping the number of work accidents down.

NNE constructs smallpox vaccine plant for Bavarian Nordic

NNE enters into agreement with Bavarian Nordic A/S for constructing production facilities on Bavarian Nordic's recently acquired site in Kvistgård, Denmark. The production plant will be used for making a vaccine against smallpox and other vaccines against infectious diseases, and the agreement implies that NNE will construct the new production facilities for the vaccine production in clean rooms with full GMP compliance. The total size of the clean rooms of class B and C is approximately 1,100 m2.

NNE France will initially focus on supporting the Novo Nordisk Group expansion in France. It is the objective to offer a range of services based on experience from NNE's many projects in Denmark, but adjusted to French needs and project culture. NNE made profit in 2003 – in spite of a large drop in turnover

In 2003 NNE experienced a significant reduction of activities. This had a considerable impact on the result of the year, leaving a pre-tax profit of DKK 4.2 million. Net turnover in 2003 was approx. DKK 960 million, which is 26% below the record turnover of DKK 1.3 billion in 2002. Pre-tax profit margin dropped to 0.4%.

300 employees leave the premises in Ballerup and Bagsværd to join the approx. 500 employees who already work at the site in Søborg. Insulin purification facility well under way

NNE's largest ongoing project is the planning and establishment of an insulin purification facility. Being built for Novo Nordisk A/S in Kalundborg, the new facility will be called PIA II and is a sister factory for PIA I, which NNE handed over to Novo Nordisk in 2001.

NNE came well out of the financial year 2002. Net turnover amounted to 1,305 Danish kroner compared to 1,125 Danish kroner in 2001, representing a 16% growth. Pre-tax profit was DKK 91 million compared to DKK 54 million in 2001, an increase of 69%. The pre-tax profit margin increased from 4.8% to 7%. Net profit for the year was DKK 53 million compared to DKK 37 million in 2001.

NNE considers FDA's announcement to be in line with the industry's desire for a more realistic and pragmatic compliance policy with focus on compliance with the intention behind the rule. That is, to ensure credible and reliable data handling of the electronic GxP data required in Predicate rules, and earlier controlled on paper. With reference to the new guidance, further possibilities are now opening up to the industry to prioritise the systems processing these electronic records in relation to data that has formerly been in a grey zone.
Advanced factory built in record time

On 1 November 2002, NNE officially handed over the NovoSeven plant to Novo Nordisk A/S in Hillerød. This happened just 18 months after approval of the project's Basic Design. With the short construction time NNE complied with the client's need for a speedy production expansion, dictated by an increasing demand for the haemophilia medicine NovoSeven.

1,723 qualified engineers and students have voted NNE to a grand 2nd place, only surpassed by our owner, in the image poll made by IFO, the Danish Institute for Opinion analysis together with the magazine 'Ingeniøren'. Respondents were asked to evaluate 100 companies in relation to values as challenging and developing work tasks, culture/spirit, employee influence and independence. And NNE was rated one of the highest on these values. It is the first time that NNE participates in an image poll as an independent company.

NNE and GEA Liquid Processing Scandinavia A/S have formed a consortium which will carry out specific assignments for Novo Nordisk A/S in connection with its new Insulin Bulk Plant in Kalundborg. The contract establishing the new consortium, which will bear the name 'GEANNE I/S', was signed on Wednesday 13 September 2000 by the finance director of GEA, Morten Johansen, and the corporate manager of NNE, Hans Ole Voigt.
