| Will VoIP be a Mass Market product? |
19 March 2004 - Power Over Ethernet A common thinking among 'Marketing people ' is that for every product that enters the market there must be a path, a target, a need (real or created) that decides how the product must enter the consumer's life, which part of the population is more likely to go for it, which niche it is going to fill and, most important '...certain things being stated, something other than what is stated follows of necessity from their being so.' and that is the final issue: the price. |

| No Outlet? Don't Worry, an Ethernet Cable May Do |
18 March 2004 - Power Over Ethernet Examples of PoE deployment in schools and hospitals are examined by the New York Times article. If you go online at the office, the chances are better than good that your messages and your Web pages come to your desk through an Ethernet cable. Wrapped in shocking blue or dull gray, with plugs a bit wider than those on a phone line, the cables have become the near-universal path for bringing data into the workplace. They have quickly become a route for telephone conversations, too, with Internet-enabled phones taking root in cubicles and executive suites. |

| Drivers and Applications for the Power over Ethernet Solution |
18 March 2004 - Power Over Ethernet As the network has become an integral part of the enterprise and small-to-medium business, a plethora of new applications have driven new devices onto the network infrastructure. Perhaps one of the most significant of these in recent years has come through the advent of new IP telephony-based clients that were first introduced in 2000. For the first time, a user-based device that was not a desktop workstation or server was connected, with Ethernet, into the switching infrastructure. The onset of IP telephony brought a new requirement, unheard of up to this point in the LAN hub and switching technology: The requirement to provide power to that end device. Cisco Systems was the first to innovate the capability of providing power to the end device, in this case, the Cisco IP phone, and began work with numerous other vendors within the IEEE to create a standards-based means of providing power from an Ethernet switch port. This capability has been ratified by the IEEE 802.3af committee and is now being widely adopted. |

| Assessing Power-Over-Ethernet's Near-Term Uses |
18 March 2004 - Power Over Ethernet This prediction is based on interviews with officials at Cisco Systems Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and PowerDsine Ltd. Temperature, smoke, heat and other environmental sensors will probably be at the top of the list of near-term future developments and will start appearing sometime in the next several years when integrated chips to control power flow become more widely available.
POE will make network cameras more prevalent, and cutting the AC cord will also make building security monitors such as badge swipe pads easier to implement.
In the next two to five years we might also start to see POE augment batteries in mobile devices. Although the engineering requirements are not trivial, we might see laptops that trickle-charge (charge slowly using a low-power Ethernet cable) from a POE data connection. Cell phones and PDAs could also get in the POE game, making special, expensive power adapters a thing of the past. |

| Choosing a Power-Over-Ethernet Approach |
17 March 2004 - Power Over Ethernet In this Wi-Fi Planet article, Jim Geier discusses the options for injecting power onto Ethernet cables, and ends up advocating the use of PoE power sources integrated into Switches. When planning the layout of a wireless LAN, you must take into consideration power sources for access points. Some companies limit installation locations to areas where a six foot cord can reach an electrical outlet. Other companies opt to install new outlets, which require extra electrical wiring. Power-over-Ethernet, however, can significantly decrease costs associated with supplying power to access points. |

| World on IP Community |
19 September 2003 - Power Over Ethernet I have always believed in the power of VOIP as a real threat to the Telecoms' monopoly. Two cheap consumer devices loom large on this front - devices that create enormous value for the owners while generating little revenue for the phone companies. The first is WiFi access points, which allow the effortless sharing of broadband connections, and the second is our VoIP phones, a real, faithful replica of the usual phones, the difference is: once you have paid for the device you won't pay for the service anymore. And the device is much cheaper than what the people could think. And they do not need a COMPUTER. |
