A new evaluation kit from Sarantel allows OEM users of the company's DioHelix-F Global Positioning System receiver module to characterise it within their system using a simple PC interface. The DioHelix-F module, which combines Sarantel's omni-directional GPS miniature antenna with the Fastrax iTrax02/4 GPS receiver, measures only 66 x 30mm and weighs 30g. The output of the module gives a digital geographical position anywhere on the earth to an accuracy of about +/-10 metres and applications range from leisure products to vehicle navigation and logistics.

Antenna manufacturer Sarantel has issued an applications note which compares the performance of patch and miniature helical antennas in Global Positioning System environments. The information, which will be of particular interest to engineers designing mobile GPS handsets and equipment, shows that whilst the patch antennas generally have a higher gain at the zenith angle (i.e. pointing vertically), the helical antennas typically have a wider beamwidth.

Antenna specialist, Sarantel, has announced GeoHelix-H, a new-technology high-gain active antenna for portable Global Positioning System receivers which enables more satellites to be acquired than conventional patch devices. Sarantel conducted field testing of the GeoHelix-H in Taipei, Taiwan, one of the world's most difficult areas for GPS satellite reception, where its superior performance was confirmed. GeoHelix-H measures only 30.4mm x 13.3mm x 6.4mm and weighs 12 grams.

Sarantel and SyChip will use the CTIA Wireless 2002 show to preview the first in the range of Dios(tm) all-in-one Global Positioning System receivers, which combine an omni-directional GPS antenna with SyChip's GPS2020 GPS receiver. The Dios Tracker 2020(tm), which measures only 50 x 18 mm and weighs 28g, simply presents any system with an RS232 serial data stream containing SiRF binary or NEMA standard navigational information.
